Boston Fire Department units responded at around 3:30pm to calls for a fire in the rear of 38 Dunster Road.  Quick action by the responding companies contained and extinguished the blaze.  No injuries were reported.   The fire left several residents of the densely populated Jamaica Plain neighborhood looking for shelter.

The pleasant tree lined street on a picture perfect autumn afternoon served as an ironic setting for firefighters battling the fast moving three alarm fire.

The threat suppressed, the damage minimized, the neighborhood protected, firefighters and residents alike, took a few moments to relax, mingle, count their blessings and appreciate their relative good fortune.

A  Jamaica Plain triple decker was heavily damaged by an unusually fast moving fire on Saturday, with the suspected cause a discarded cigarette carelessly tossed onto a front porch couch.

Boston firefighters responded around 1:15 p.m. to reports of a fire "in the area" of 306 South Street.  When first units arrived, they found the house at that address already heavily involved.  2nd and 3rd alarms were quickly ordered.  The blaze eventually went to a 4th alarm.  A pet cat owned by a tenant, perished in the fire.

All occupants managed to escape safely.

At times, a thick layer of smoke blanketed the neighborhood and the spectators who had gathered to watch.  Included in the crowd were current and former residents of the house, some who had to struggle to maintain their composure.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.  Fire officials placed the damage estimate at $350,000.
